Shaddoll Discussion Thread

Post by Roach on Fri Nov 28, 2014 1:20 pm

Introduction

In the abyss of this world, there is a certain something called the "Shaddoll Core" (The Primordial "Core" of Shadow-Possession) which gives birth to shadows that absorb light, the "Shaddoll".
"El Shaddoll Construct" uses these shadow strings to control the manifested shadows, and with this to extend its influence and power...

''Shaddoll'' is an archetype that debuted in Duelist Alliance. Their focus is the Fusion Summon of the more powerful "El Shaddoll" monsters, which restrict or punish Special Summons.
The Main Deck "Shaddoll" monsters all have Flip Effects that focus on searching and field advantage, as well as secondary effects that focus on regaining advantage whenever they are sent to the Graveyard by a card effect.

Archtype Cards:

Shaddoll Beast:

FLIP: You can draw 2 cards, then discard 1 card.
If this card is sent to the Graveyard by a card effect: You can draw 1 card. You can only use 1 "Shaddoll Beast" effect per turn, and only once that turn.

Shaddoll Dragon:

FLIP: You can target 1 card your opponent controls; return it to the hand.
If this card is sent to the Graveyard by a card effect: You can target 1 Spell/Trap Card on the field; destroy it. You can only use 1 "Shaddoll Dragon" effect per turn, and only once that turn.

Shaddoll Falco:

FLIP: You can target 1 "Shaddoll" monster in your Graveyard, except "Shaddoll Falco"; Special Summon it in face-down Defense Position.
If this card is sent to the Graveyard by a card effect: You can Special Summon it in face-down Defense Position. You can only use 1 "Shaddoll Falco" effect per turn, and only once that turn.

Shaddoll Hedgehog:

FLIP: You can add 1 "Shaddoll" Spell/Trap Card from your Deck to your hand.
If this card is sent to the Graveyard by a card effect: You can add 1 "Shaddoll" monster from your Deck to your hand, except "Shaddoll Hedgehog". You can only use 1 "Shaddoll Hedgehog" effect per turn, and only once that turn.

Shaddoll Hound:

FLIP: You can target 1 "Shaddoll" card in your Graveyard; add it to your hand.
If this card is sent to the Graveyard by a card effect: You can target 1 monster on the field; change its battle position. (Flip monsters' effects are not activated at this time, except "Shaddoll" monsters'.) You can only use 1 "Shaddoll Hound" effect per turn, and only once that turn.

Shaddoll Squamata:

FLIP: You can target 1 monster on the field; destroy it.
If this card is sent to the Graveyard by a card effect: You can send 1 "Shaddoll" card from your Deck to the Graveyard, except "Shaddoll Squamata". You can only use 1 "Shaddoll Squamata" effect per turn, and only once that turn.

Ohr-Shaddoll Sephira Roots:

Pendulum Effect  You cannot Pendulum Summon monsters, except "Shaddoll" or "Sephira" monsters. This effect cannot be negated.
Monster Effect  If this card is Pendulum Summoned, or if this card is sent to the Graveyard: You can target 1 "Sephira" card in your Pendulum Zones, except "Ore-Shaddoll Sephira Roots"; Special Summon it. You can only use this effect of "Ore-Shaddoll Sephira Roots" once per turn.

Jesshaddoll - Sephira Naga:

Pendulum Effect  You cannot Pendulum Summon monsters, except "Shaddoll" or "Sephira" monsters. This effect cannot be negated.
Monster Effect  If this card is Pendulum Summoned, or if this card is sent to the Graveyard: You can target 1 card in either player's Pendulum Zone; return it to the hand. You must control a "Sephira" card in your Pendulum Zone to activate and to resolve this effect. You can only use this effect of "Jesshaddoll - Sephira Naga" once per turn.

Curse of the Shadow Prison:

Each time a "Shaddoll" monster(s) is sent to the Graveyard by a card effect, place 1 Spellstone Counter on this card for each sent monster. All monsters your opponent controls lose 100 ATK for each Spellstone Counter on this card during your opponent's turn only. Each time you Fusion Summon a "Shaddoll" Fusion Monster, you can remove 3 Spellstone Counters from this card to use 1 appropriate face-up monster your opponent controls as 1 of the Fusion Materials.

El Shaddoll Fusion:

Fusion Summon 1 "Shaddoll" Fusion Monster from your Extra Deck, using monsters from your hand or your side of the field as Fusion Materials. You can only activate 1 "El Shaddoll Fusion" per turn.

Nepheshaddoll Fusion:

Activate this card by declaring an Attribute; equip only to a "Shaddoll" monster. The Attribute of the equipped monster becomes the declared Attribute. If you control the equipped monster and this card: You can Fusion Summon 1 "Shaddoll" Fusion Monster from your Extra Deck, using monsters from your hand or your side of the field as Fusion Materials, including the equipped monster you control. You can only use this effect of "Nepheshaddoll Fusion" once per turn.

Shaddoll Fusion:

Fusion Summon 1 "Shaddoll" Fusion Monster from your Extra Deck, using monsters from your hand or your side of the field as Fusion Materials. If your opponent controls a monster(s) that was Special Summoned from the Extra Deck, you can also use monsters in your Deck as Fusion Material. You can only activate 1 "Shaddoll Fusion" per turn.

Sinister Shadow Games:

Send 1 "Shaddoll" card from your Deck to the Graveyard, then you can change any number of face-down Defense Position "Shaddoll" monsters you control to face-up Defense Position.

Shaddoll Core:

Special Summon this card as an Effect Monster (Spellcaster-Type/DARK/Level 9/ATK 1450/DEF 1950). (This card is also still a Trap Card.) If Summoned this way, you can substitute this monster for 1 Fusion Material that lists an Attribute, on a "Shaddoll" Fusion Monster Card. If this card is sent to the Graveyard by a card effect: You can target 1 "Shaddoll" Spell /Trap Card in your Graveyard, except "Shaddoll Core"; add it to your hand.

El Shaddoll Construct:

1 "Shaddoll" monster + 1 LIGHT monster
Must first be Fusion Summoned. If this card is Special Summoned: You can send 1 "Shaddoll" card from your Deck to the Graveyard. At the start of the Damage Step, if this card battles a Special Summoned monster: Destroy that monster. If this card is sent to the Graveyard: You can target 1 "Shaddoll" Spell/Trap Card in your Graveyard; add it to your hand.

El Shaddoll Grysta:

1 "Shaddoll" monster + 1 FIRE monster
Must first be Fusion Summoned. During either player's turn, when your opponent would Special Summon a monster(s) while you have a "Shaddoll" card in your hand: You can negate the Summon, and if you do, destroy that monster, then send 1 "Shaddoll" card from your hand to the Graveyard. You can only use this effect of "El Shaddoll Grysta" once per turn. If this card is sent to the Graveyard: You can target 1 "Shaddoll" Spell/Trap Card in your Graveyard; add it to your hand.

El Shaddoll Shekhinaga:

1 "Shaddoll" monster + 1 EARTH monster
Must first be Fusion Summoned. During either player's turn, when a Special Summoned monster activates its effect while you have a "Shaddoll" card in your hand: You can negate the activation, and if you do, destroy that monster, then send 1 "Shaddoll" card from your hand to the Graveyard. You can only use this effect of "El Shaddoll Shekhinaga" once per turn. If this card is sent to the Graveyard: You can target 1 "Shaddoll" Spell/Trap Card in your Graveyard; add it to your hand.

El Shaddoll Wendigo:

1 "Shaddoll" monster + 1 WIND monster
Must first be Fusion Summoned. During either player's turn: You can target 1 monster you control; this turn, it cannot be destroyed by battle with an opponent's Special Summoned monster. You can only use this effect of "El Shaddoll Wendigo" once per turn. If this card is sent to the Graveyard: You can target 1 "Shaddoll" Spell/Trap Card in your Graveyard; add it to your hand.

El Shaddoll Winda:

1 "Shaddoll" monster + 1 DARK monster
Must first be Fusion Summoned. Cannot be destroyed by an opponent's card effects. Each player can only Special Summon monster(s) once per turn while this card is face-up on the field. If this card is sent to the Graveyard: You can target 1 "Shaddoll" Spell/Trap Card in your Graveyard; add it to your hand.

El Shaddoll Anomalilith:

1 "Shaddoll" monster + 1 WATER monster
Must first be Fusion Summoned. Neither player can Special Summon monsters from the hand or Graveyard with Spell/Trap effects. If this card is sent to the Graveyard: You can target 1 "Shaddoll" Spell/Trap Card in your Graveyard; add it to your hand.

Playing style

Although the main strategy of the Deck is the Fusion Summon of "El Shaddoll" monsters, the "Shaddoll" monsters themselves are rather disruptive, such as "Shaddoll Dragon", who bounces cards when flipped face-up or "Shaddoll Squamata", who destroys monsters when flipped. In the other hand, they also have effects that activate when they are sent to the Graveyard, such as "Dragon", which destroys one of your opponent's Spell/Trap cards; "Shaddoll Falco" Special Summons itself in face-down Defense Position, while "Shaddoll Hedgehog" searches for a "Shaddoll" monster. These effects give the player advantage and set ups for future plays, while punishing the opponent. Because "Falco" is also a Tuner, the player also can have Synchro Summoning options.

However all "Shaddoll" monsters can only use one of their effects and only once that turn so while the players are advised discretion, they can also plan ahead. Cards like "Sinister Shadow Games" can be very effective since they can send a "Shaddoll" monster from the Deck to the Graveyard and then flip any possible Set "Shaddoll" monsters to use many effects in combination during the opponent's turn.

One can also take profit of their effects by using them as Fusion Material for the ace cards of the Deck: the "El Shaddoll" Fusion monsters. Since using "Shaddoll Fusion" or "El Shaddoll Fusion" involves sending "Shaddoll" monsters to the Graveyard by a card effect, their effects can be activated as soon as one attempts to Fusion Summon them, creating even more advantage. One can also use "Curse of the Shadow Prison" to not only weaken the opponent's monsters but also use their monsters as Fusion Materials.

The aforementioned "El Shaddoll" monsters rely on anti-supporting Special Summons, either by restricting them, negating them, destroying Special Summoned monsters in battle or destroying those ones who dare to activate their effects; also, some of them sends 1 "Shaddoll" card from your hand to the Graveyard at its effect's resolution, which can trigger the effect of the sent monster. Finally, they can recycle the "Shaddoll" Spell/Trap cards as long as they are sent to the Graveyard, so even if their are destroyed during or after their Summoning they can still re-add cards like "Shaddoll Fusion" to set up a Fusion Summon the next turn.

So far, the "El Shaddoll" monsters follow a pattern of requiring "1 "Shaddoll" monster + 1 [corresponding Attribute] monster" as Fusion Materials, and their effects go more aggressive as their Level increase:

Weaknesses

Since the Deck basically relies on sending the "Shaddoll" monsters to the Graveyard in order to trigger their effects, or flipping them face-up, cards like "Soul Drain" and "Abyss Dweller" or "Armades, Keeper of Boundaries", "Majesty's Fiend", "Gem-Knight Citrine" can be simple and effective. One can also use cards that banish or return the Fusion Monsters to the extra deck to avoid the retriever effect. Due to cards like "El Shaddoll Winda", cards that can do this without the need to special summon, such as "Compulsory Evacuation Device", "Phoenix Wing Wind Blast," and "Karma Cut," are recommended. The variety of Types and Attributes also makes the Fusion monsters vulnerable to floodgate cards like "Rivalry of Warlords" and "Gozen Match". "Skill Drain" is also a viable solution as it counters the anti-Special Summoning effects of the "El Shaddoll" monsters. This makes certain Decks that can use "Skill Drain" able to effectively bypass the "Shaddoll" Deck's threats.  Finally, being that most of the monsters are DARK Attribute, "Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror" and "Constellarknight Diamond" can stop them from activating their Flip and Graveyard effects.

Didn't think people were even questioning it.

You can trigger any of your main deck shaddoll monster using it and it is earth fodder for the fusion.

I would run 2 if I was playing the deck. Mainly because if I played it at 3 I'd end up with clumpy hands and drawing triples too often, but that's just me :3

Treeborn Frog was what got me. And Jeff said it was because his friend (or someone) liked it, He never planned of playing it.

I wonder how many people have net decked it and are trying to figure out how to use treeborn in this deck LMAO.

You use is as tribute fodder to set Beast, obviously.

Also, enemy controller shenanigans!

Very marginal I know..

I Find it interesting that Chaos is the preferred build right now given the S/T Hate you can do with a full scale Artifact engine.. Guess that doesn't matter too much if you can open Denko Sekka x3

I think the chaos build is slightly more favourable because Denko kills BA back row so you can safely fusion and the dragons also help with OTK's by special summing them to inflict some damage without using your normal summon.

I wonder how many people have net decked it and are trying to figure out how to use treeborn in this deck LMAO.

Once Konami makes a Water Fusion Treeborn will be staple.

Edit: if the Fusion is actually good ofc.

Yeah you could be right, But if you were play the Chaos build I think Tidal would be a better option because you could use it as material then providing you have dragons in grave (quit likely) you could SS it back. But if Wendigo is anything to go by it will be garbage and lets be honest that will probably be the case because BA & Qli are Konami's new cash cows.

Treebor frogs and Shaddoll Dragons for Tidal's SS though. Playing Tidal will only mean using Frogs that you have already used for fusion because tributing it for Beast is kind of random and Shaddolls sometimes play a lot of backrow especialy when they side.
