[Archetype Discussion] Monarchs

Post by SilentKatana on Thu Dec 17, 2015 11:42 am

First topic message reminder :

Monarchs

"Monarch" is a series of lv 5 or higher monsters, also know as "Emperor" in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V Manga, each possessing an attribute reflective of the element they control, each possessing 2400/2800 attack and 1000 defense. They are supported by a series of monsters called "Vassals", smaller versions of the monarchs, each with 800 attack and 1000 defense, dedicated to summoning their larger counterparts. They are used by The Light Brigade members in the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX anime and by Silvio Sawatari in the Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V anime and manga.

Once per turn, during either player's Main Phase, if this card is in your Graveyard: You can discard 1 "Monarch" Spell/Trap Card, then target 1 monster in your Graveyard with 2400 or more ATK and 1000 DEF; add it to your hand.

Pantheism of the Monarchs:

Send 1 “Monarch” Spell/Trap Card from your hand to the Graveyard; draw 2 cards.

The Monarchs Stormforth:

Once during this turn, if you would Tribute a monster(s) for a Tribute Summon, you can Tribute 1 monster your opponent controls as if you controlled it. You can only activate 1 "The Monarchs Stormforth" per turn. During the turn you activate this card, you cannot Special Summon monsters from the Extra Deck.

March of the Monarchs:

Tribute Summoned monsters you control cannot be targeted by, or destroyed by card effects. You cannot Special Summon monsters from your Extra Deck.

Return of the Monarchs:

You cannot Special Summon monsters from the Extra Deck. When you Tribute Summon a monster: You can activate 1 of these effects;
● Add, from your Deck to your hand, 1 monster with 2400 ATK and 1000 DEF with a different name from that Tribute Summoned monster.
● Add, from your Deck to your hand, 1 monster with 2800 ATK and 1000 DEF with a different name from that Tribute Summoned monster.
The Tribute Summoned monster must be face-up on the field to activate and to resolve this effect. You can only activate this effect of "Return of the Monarchs" once per turn.

The Dominion of the Legendary Monarch:

While you have no cards in your Extra Deck, if you control a Tribute Summoned monster and your opponent does not, your opponent cannot Special Summon monsters from the Extra Deck. If a Tribute Summoned monster you control attacks an opponent's monster, it gains 800 ATK during damage calculation only. Once per turn: You can reduce the Level of 1 monster in your hand that has 2800 ATK and 1000 DEF by 2 (even after they are Summoned/Set or if this card leaves the field), until the end of this turn.

Strike of the Monarchs:

You can Tribute 1 face-up Level 5 or higher Normal Summoned/Set monster, then target 1 face-up card on the field; negate its effect until the end of this turn, then draw 1 card. During your Main Phase, if this card is in your Graveyard: You can banish this card, then declare 1 Attribute; all face-up monsters currently on the field become that Attribute until the end of this turn.

The Prime Monarch:

Once per turn: You can target 2 "Monarch" Spell/Trap Cards in your Graveyard; shuffle them into the Deck, then draw 1 card. If this card is in your Graveyard: You can banish 1 other "Monarch" Spell/Trap Card from your Graveyard; Special Summon this card in Defense Position as a Normal Monster (Fairy-Type/LIGHT/Level 5/ATK 1000/DEF 2400). (This card is NOT treated as a Trap Card.) You can only use this effect of "The Prime Monarch" once per turn.

Escalation of the Monarchs:

Once per turn, during your opponent's Main Phase or your opponent's Battle Phase, you can: Immediately after this effect resolves, Tribute Summon 1 monster.

The Monarchs Erupt:

Activate this card only if you have no cards in your Extra Deck and control a Tribute Summoned monster. Negate the effects of all face-up monsters on the field, except Tribute Summoned monsters. During your End Phase, if you control no Tribute Summoned monsters, send this card to the Graveyard.

The Monarchs Awaken:

If you have no cards in your Extra Deck: Target 1 face-up Tribute Summoned monster you control; its effects are negated, also it is unaffected by the effects of cards other than this card.

The First Monarch:

Special Summon this card as an effect monster (Fiend-Type/DARK/Level 6/ATK 1000/DEF 2400). (This card is still a Trap Card) If Summoned this way: You can discard 1 card, then declare 1 Attribute; this card becomes that Attribute, and can be treated as 2 Tributes for the Tribute Summoned of a monster with the same Attribute as this card. While this card is treated as a monster, you cannot Special Summon monsters, except monsters with this card's Attribute.

Non-archetype cards:

Majesty's Fiend
Vanity's Fiend
Psyframelord Omega
Elder Entity N'Tss
Reinforcement of the Army
Reinforce Truth
One for One

~

Playing Style
Monarchs as a deck, focus exclusively on tribute summoning, at the expense of their extra deck in most cases, gaining advantage by picking apart the opponent's field with each individual monarch. Alongside this, the monarchs tend to forma nigh-impenentrable wall through such powerful cards as "March of the Monarchs" Whilst also locking the opponent out of the game with such cards as "Dominion of the Legendary Monarch" and "The Monarchs Erupt". Monarchs can also make strong game-ending pushes by tribute summoning multiple tiimes in a turn, or tribut summoning on the opponent's turn, making them a deadly threat indeed.

~

Weaknesses
Certain floodgates, such as Mask of Restrict, can shut down Monarchs completely, whilst cards that shut down their tribute engine effectively cripples the deck, as it renders them almost incapable of summoning their monarchs. Decks with a high amount of Spell and Trap disruption, such as artifacts, can also pose a real problem for monarchs, given the amount they rely on their various floodgate cards.

Still, nothing I play got hit so I didn't touch main at all exept switching Crush Card Virus with Emptyness from side to main. I'm usually able to pull Dark Law almost every turn + if I get Fiendish Chain or Mind Crush, they're pretty much screwed, after siding I just put in 3 Masks of Restric and few Spell Shatering Arrows and deck it DEAD. Once again I'm actually impressed how new decks arrive and I still have decent Match-ups and shit like, I never loseeee

With Link format in its very early stages , where not a lot of link monsters are released, Monarchs are one of the popular decks that budget players play now. The interaction between True Draco's and Monarchs with Domain is also something to be aware of (Ignis is a 2400-1000 monster thus can be comboed with the monarch spells) and is a "go to" deck to people that refuse to play the new archetypes. What do you think, are Monarchs meta now(even with some key cards being limited)?
